Poached eggs with bacon or salmon on sourdough from Woodstock Bakery with hollandaise sauce, Oryx Salt and a side of slow-roasted tomatoes. Accompanied by a flat white from Origin Coffee Roasters.
You can already smell the enticing aromas of breakfast and coffee just reading that! Hidden behind an enormous hedge on 94 Belvedere Road, Claremont, Cape Town Starlings is a small family restaurant that is different to any other.
‘We’re difficult to find but once you do we promise great coffee, simple honest fare and a smile. Your local.” They say on their website. It’s true! There’s no signboard advertising the restaurant and yet Starlings is without fail always buzzing and full regardless of the day of the week or time of day. What’s their secret?
Is it being greeted by a fountain as you enter the old converted home filled with charmingly eclectic décor and furnishings? Is it their delightful garden setting offering tables under shady trees amongst flowering shrubs and greenery? (there’s even a secret love-arbour hidden in the corner) Or their fabulous menu featuring local produce that is cooked and served with love?
Starlings Café source only locally responsible and wholesome produce to use as their ingredients. As a member of the long table project Starlings is committed to uplifting its staff and community. For example, the spinach they use comes from a local urban farmer who cultivates it on a small plot of land in Wynberg just around the corner. Solitaire Free Range Eggs are sourced from the Hemel and Aarde Valley.
Reading through some of the reviews customers have written it is evident that offers exactly what is needed: Startlings is a place where friends and family can come together to enjoy each other’s company, great food and spectacular coffee – delivered with a friendly smile.
Thank you Starlings for putting Oryx Desert Salt on your tables.
